To eat meat is an act of murder. We humans are vegetarians by nature. (In fact, we are fruitarians). If you put a lion or a tiger in a cage and feed him with fruits and vegetables....the animal will simply starve to death. Anybody who has a cat knows that if you give a cat a piece of an apple, he won’t even recognize that as food. Sometimes they may smell it out of curiosity. The cat will die from starvation if he will be fed with fruits. And it doesn’t matter if you will give him ten pounds of food a day. He won’t eat and will die. And the same goes for a giraffe, an elephant or a deer. Feed a deer with meat and he won’t eat. Once again, he won’t even smell the meat. If you put a human inside a cage and feed him with bottles of glass, pieces of wood and cardboard.....do you think that that person will take the time to smell the glass? No, we simply don’t recognize that as food. And we don’t even have to smell it to know for sure that that piece of glass is not food. All the preceding explanation was necessary to make my point really clear and unambiguous: a lion has NO CHOICE: EITHER HE KILLS AN ANIMAL FOR FOOD OR HE DIES. BUT WE DO HAVE A CHOICE SINCE WE CAN LIVE A NORMAL AND HEALTHY LIFE WITHOUT CONSUMING MEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that my friends, is what makes the whole difference.....a big difference indeed. Being that we can live without eating meat........in my personal view, to eat an animal is simply an act of murder. People tend to let us (vegetarians) know that we can’t survived without meat. There is a big difference between “disagreement” and “ignorance”. One person may say the Bush is an excellent president while another one may think that he is bad: that will be a “disagreement”. If one of them will say that Bush is not the president of the USA that will be “ignorance” and there is nothing you can discuss with that guy. To say that humans are carnivorous or omnivorous is “ignorance” since the compared anatomy of our digest track, the lateral movement of our jaws, the lack of claws, the impossibility for us to hunt with no tools, the concentration of hydrochloric acid in our stomach (ten times lower than the one found on carnivorous), the concentration of ptyalin in our saliva (ten times higher than in carnivorous), the lack of sharp teeth (the two canines we have are a joke compared to what a real canine is), the length of our bowels (like in all vegetarians: very long compared to very short tracks for carnivorous), the fact that we have pores to perspire (not found in carnivorous), the way our hands are made (specially for eating fruits) and there are more than 100 other things that, obviously, I won’t write here. To say that we need meat in order to get proteins is another demonstration of ignorance: kilo per kilo, soy beans contain more than twice the proteins that meat has. Besides, if meat was so necessary for human existence, we (vegetarians) wouldn’t be alive. It is not my intention to be offensive with those who believe in meat as “the salvation”, nevertheless, I feel compelled to let you know that when talking about something, you have to know ... Ah... there is one more point to those who eat meat: “compassion”. Even if we were omnivorous, a cow, a rabbit or a deer are animals who can give us love an affection in the very same way our so common dogs and cats do. I myself used to love fried chicken, it was my favorite food. Till I realized that for me to enjoy that tasty food, a life had to be taken. Thank you for such a wonderful web site. Sincerely Gustavo

I wish that you had taken more time to throughly research your information before posting it. As a meat producer nothing irritates me more than misinformation. While I do concede that there are meat packing operations out there that do not practice humane slaughtering practices, many of us do practice humane slaughter procedures. Many of my neighbors and friends operate top of the line dairies that are nowhere near the operations that you picture on your site. Lets take a look at some of the facts: 1) Most dairy calves are not destined to become veal. Plain and simple, dairy meat lacks the flavor and color of beef. Most dairy calves (bulls to be exact) are raised at feed lots and slaughter for large scale supermarkets. That is why a steak bought at a diner is more flavorful and tasty...it is true beef, not dairy beef. 2) Beef cattle are mishandled and stressed out during the slaughtering process. WRONG! Most quality meat producers limit stress why? Because: a) an animal that dies while on the feedlot does not sale! b) The less stress and animal has before it is killed, the better the meat. It is simple biology here folks. Animals that are frightened or stressed have aderinal chemicals in their bloodstream that effects the taste of the meat. 3) Most producers over graze and over feed. WRONG AGAIN...over grazing pasture leads to reduced capacity, simple as that. Maintaing a well rotated pasture plan, and ample grass stores for animals not only increases profits (less fertizlizers, leass soil erosion, and quicker range recovery)but proper range management procedures allow the producer greater flexibility. 4) Animals in the feed lot are overtaxed and prone to lung ailments and more disease. Again, the great deal of producers want those animals to make it to market, therefore they balance their livestock in conditions that promote healty weight gain and good health. Quality grain rations for the animals and ample hay rations make a better product with nutritional value. I constitantly produce choice or prime grade beef because I manage rations, pasturing and health wisely. The higher my beef grades the higher the price I recieve for it... simple economics here people. Animals with less stress gain faster and produce a guality product. Finally most meat producers kill humanely. I do not raise animals with out getting to know them. (sounds wierd but it is true)The last thing I and most of my colleauges want is to see an animal that we have patiently raised and cared for suffer. We kill the old fashioned way. A .22 bullet does the job and the animal is not hung up until it has stopped breathing and moving. Before the next one is brought in the carcass and waste products are moved out of the kill floor. The animal's bodily fluids are drained into drums for proper disposal, and samples are taken for testing. Now don't take me for a meat freak. I respect people who choose the vegan lifestyle (albeit I don't understand how they can get to proper nutritional needs)I do however ask in return that people get a clear picture of the meat/dairy producing industry. An overwhelming amount of folks are out there doing it the right way, the humane way. A few bad apples have spoiled the harvest though for us. Blessings to all...

Just because something is labeled as "free range", doesn't mean it actually is free range. I can't remember the exact data, but the requirements on what can be called free range are not very strict. The animals could still be kept in small dirty enclosures-so long as they get a couple hours outside they can be called "free range." Of course, there are places that actually are free range, and even if certain places are only barely free range, it's better than not at all, I guess. Oh, and I have something to add to your part about cattle in slaughterhouses. I've been on a field trip to a slaughterhouse and actually saw a cow be killed. It didn't die the first time, so they kept hitting it and shocking it as it was screaming-it was the most disgusting sound I have ever heard in my life. A poor, defenseless animal screaming in fear, and all so some obese guy can have a hamburger. These animals are not only intellegent, but they are also emotional. We think it's wrong to eat dogs-pigs have the intelligence of a human toddler. Why is it okay to eat them? If we are all equal, how do we decide who to kill and who to love as our own?

I was surprised by the vast amount of information here! There were a few things you left out, but wow-great job! Can you believe the guy that said something about meat preventing cancer in humans that eat nothing but meat? yeah right...fruit and vegetables are not only vital nutrients, but they can prevent some cancers and diseases. If I'm not mistaken, the only nutrients that meat has is the B vitamins. Great website with a lot of factual information. You should add some quotes, too. Like by George Bernard Shaw and others. It would be a nice addition to the site.
